A Very Bad Word

Headache.  The word that will always send panic through my soul.

It's been a long, hard week.  Here in West Tennessee the weather has been at it's worst.  71 degrees on Tuesday, 21 degrees today.  No wonder Lucy's teacher called me to come get her today.  Jack has a nasty cold and now Lucy seems to be falling in line.  Erik and I think its a barometric pressure headache.  Online research shows that most surgeons don't agree with that theory, but lots of mommies do.  I tend to trust the mommies.  Anyone have any comments about that?  It sure might help me rest a little easier.  By the way, we went back and did some weather research and the last time Lucy had one of these bad headaches there was an 18 degree shift in weather the next day.  Hmmm....

Did I mention that the girls went to the duck blind their Pops last weekend?  It was so sweet to see how excited they both were.  Its funny, but I think Lucy was the most excited.  Ella learned to use a turkey call, too.  Yep, we are going to end up with country girls despite their Daddy's best efforts.  Tomorrow is the Juvenile Hunt and Erik and my Dad are taking Ella.  I'm taking Lucy to the LeBonheur Tea Party, but I think she would rather go to the duck blind!

The rest of the week has just been busy!  Running here, running there.  Someone told me last night that I did too much.  I told them that it kept my mind from wandering to places it doesn't need to be.  Like worrying about headaches.

So, does anyone want to start the Fun Fridays again?  I'd love to do it, but didn't know if there was any interest.  Leave me a comment and let me know.  Here's to a happy weekend!

  1. I just wanted to say that when it comes to pressure change headaches, the Mommies are right!
Where we live in Switzerland it is actually an acknowledged problem, and the local paper will report on the chance of pressure headaches alongside the weather and the pollen count.
We live between 2 mountain ranges, and at certain times of year the wind races along the valley bringing with it sudden pressure drops. It even has a special name, and some people are affected very dramatically, whilst others don't suffer at all.
So go with the Mommies on this one, and I hope Lucy feels better soon.

  2. My daughter has horrible sinus/lung issues that we're still in the process of trying to figure out how to fix. But I know if there's a drastic change in the weather, sometimes as little as a 10 degree difference from the high one day to the next, then BAM she has a full blown sinus infection and difficulty breathing. The drastic drops in the weather most definitely make her sick and cause issues. No doctor will be able to convince me otherwise. To me it's kinda like when doctors say babies/toddlers don't run fever from teething. All moms know they really do, despite doctors insisting that they don't!

  3. I have to agree with the mommies also. I know that my daughter and I had both had a horrible headache Tuesday as the front was moving in. My youngest daughter now has sinus issues as a result.

I've suffered with these types of headaches for over 50 years and my daughter for 30 years when the weather changes drastically here in W.Tn. What we have found that works better than anything is ibuprofen, a little coca-cola, and a very warm deep bath. Works everytime including today. Thankyou Jesus!! Hope this helps precious Lucy.

  7. My daughter also gets the sinus headaches when there is a drastic weather change - hope she feels better. I loved the Fun Fridays. I like link parties that have unique topics and are tied to good writing :-)

  8. I have headaches my entire life, very bad migraines as well. The barometric pressure definitely causes me to have worse than normal ones.

  9. I agree that the headache could be caused from pressure changes. In my opinion the barometric pressure has lots of effects on the body even changes in BP. What I have found works best for mine when I get them (Had one from 2:30 on Tuesday until sometime on Thursday) is Benadryl and Tylenol combined.

  11. I agree, mommies are right. I had brain surgery 2 years ago, twice within a month. Since then, when the barometric pressure changes, I feel it in my head. Sometimes I just feel "foggy" and sometimes I ache. This week I ached, a bunch. Wednesday I felt so awful I went to bed at 5pm and didn't wake up for more than a few minutes til 6:30 am the next morning (when my alarm went off for work).

The weather effecting brains? Yeah, no joke.

  12. We have had similar weather and I have had a terrible headache the last two days. I am pregnant so I asked my doctor and she thought it was the change in weather! Also, rain or snow does the same thing to my head. I have always been sensitive to it.

  13. When I taught preschool, we called it the "barometric crazies!!" seriously, if the barometric pressure was changing the kids were simply nuts, cmpletely out of control and behaving so out of the ordinary for them.

  14. I get barometric headaches, however, barometric headaches occur when there is a change in the air pressure and air pressure changes when precipitation comes in- so for example- if we are going to get a storm, the barometric pressure will go down and that is what causes the headaches. Who cares what the surgeon says! (ok , I suppose you care sometimes ;) ). Low pressure headaches exist!

  15. I get headaches when it's supposed to rain/snow/etc. I have for as long as I can remember, I'm 23 now. Always happens though. I'll tell ya before the weather man that it's going to storm.

  16. Not sure if this will help as I haven't done my own research on headaches and weather changes, but I do see a neurologist for vestibular migraines. He said that it is very common for weather changes of any kind to set off a migraine in me or anyone. He wasn't surprised at all that I notice more headaches and migraines during extreme weather changes. I just had 3 days straight of a migraine, because the weather was changing so much. Praying for your family and sweet Lucy.

  17. Headaches can definitely be brought on by weather changes. I have had trouble with this most of my adult life. Last month, I read a new study that proved it is true (I don't have the actual link, but you can google "study headaches triggered by weather changes" and see lots of doctors are in agreement.
Also, please keep doing the Fun Friday posts! I love seeing your ideas and everyone else's related posts. Great way to find other blogging moms!
I pray for Lucy and your family often. Thank you for taking us along with you on your families journey...your words are honest, encouraging, sometimes heartbreaking, but always inspirational.

  18. I know a lot of people who got headaches from the recent temps true changes. I the moms are right! Also, I would love it if you brought back fun Friday!

  19. I get pressure headaches too. Mine are not bad but they are a dull ache that will stay the whole day.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I am a migraine sufferer and the majority of my headaches come from pressure change.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I also think that pressure headaches actually occur. I am familiar with them from my hometown in Southern Gemany.

Yes, Fun Fridays were fun and it would be great to have them back! ~ Hugs to you and your family - Bea @ galactosemia in PDX

  22. I also seem to have some weather-triggered headaches. When Princess Lucy is willing to close her eyes for a few minutes, rub just a dab of Vicks Vapor Rub on her little sinuses. It gives me some relief. Also, give her a hug from me, a stranger who loves her!

  23. i may not be a surgeon OR a mommy, but i AM someone who has a vp shunt (adult-onset) as well as a chronic migraine disorder which leaves me with a full-on migraine DAILY. (just to be clear, we're not talking regular headaches, we're talking migraines, with all the nausea/vomiting and other symptoms that come with that.)

changes in weather (barometric pressure) have ALWAYS been a trigger for me. my situation is different from yours, but i did want to point out that i have a shunt, get these headaches, AND my Neurologist has always said barometric pressure changes are a common trigger for his patients.

use your mommy-instinct, which i'm sure is more accurate than anything else. i'll be praying for healing for Jack & Lucy's colds, that Lucy has JUST a cold, peace for all of you, wisdom for the doctors, and mostly peace & wisdom for you & her daddy as you make these tough decisions on a day-to-day basis. :-)

  24. I too have cronic migraines....(nausia, seeing spots etc....) the trigger we have concluded to is barametric pressure...I live in Canada we can have huge temperature changes in short periods of time and I am affected by them often.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I can imagine how headaches freak you out (and they would me too), but if it helps I definitely have chronic headaches with pressure change. We lived in south FL for 17 years and I had a headache every year at the beginning of rainy season that lasted four or five days. Every single year. Now we live in Arizona where it only rains a couple of times a year. We just had a week of rain and I had a headache the entire time. I think especially in areas where the pressure change is dramatic, it can certainly cause headaches.

  26. Dear Kate, it's been awhile since I've checked your blog ... wow, your kids have gotten even more beautiful! It's good, too, to see your smile in pictures. I will be praying for you, but try not to worry. Sometimes a headache is just a headache. I think what you said about the temperature pressure making sense.

  27. I loved fun fridays! But, if you are too busy, I guess easy thing to drop.

  28. Boo to the headaches...I agree about this crazy weather being the cause. It has been a very sick winter. I'm thinking maybe I'm not staying busy enough. Maybe that would keep me from worrying so much. 5K....I've never signed up for one. Maybe Lucy's should be my first? :). And finally, love Fun Fridays, but hate blogging pressure. I say do it on your terms...when it happens without stressing you out.

    Take care!

  29. Hi Kate,

I have Arthritis and Fibromyagia and I can tell you 100% that I am EXTREMELY Weather Affected!! I live with wide spread pain 24/7 but my pain is 100x's WORSE when there is a sudden change in the pressure or when it is extremely cold or damp out - Rain does me In!! I'm so sorry Lucy has been suffering but I can assure you, she is NOT alone. Actually, this might make you feel even better - both my family Dr and my Specialist (my pain Dr) are constantly asking me how I'm doing with the weather b/c so often if one of their patients is suffering b/c of their chronic illnesses and the weather!!! Even my best friend who is recovering from Breast Cancer is now also weather affects!! I know its hard and it hurts. Please give Lucy a gentle hug for me and give yourself one too!!! God Bless!! xoxo

  30. Chalk another one up to weather related headaches here! Try journaling weather patterns & how Lucy feels each day & I bet you will see a pattern!! (I know, journal in all of your spare time, right??). That is how I was able to pin point my triggers. Continued prayers for your sweet family!!

  31. Our weather here is blink and you miss it. Mommy instinct is the best! We know our kids best. i used to tell our pediatrician "my mommy thermometer" says 101.

Fun Friday? Only if YOU have time. Don't add to the list.

    I continue to pray.

  32. Kate - It's JJ. Every since my surgery, the pressure changes give me a horrible headache. Call me and I can give you some ideas to help.

  33. I don't know about surgeons and I've never had brain surgery, but I get horrific migraines from barometric pressure changes. I know when the weather will change and how drastic it will be by how badly my head hurts. Praying for Miss Lucy!

  34. Long time headache and migraine sufferer here. Weather can totally play a part in the cause of headaches. My neurologist agrees! He point blank told me changes in barometric pressure (or any extreme change for that matter), for many, can cause the onset of a headache, and that unfortunately, there wasn't a heck of a lot one could do about it. Helpful, huh?

  35. I'm gonna side with the mommies on this one... I have horrible headaches with extreme weather changes. so do my girls. they are so painful!!! Praying for Little Lucy!!

  37. Mommies are right. I have suffered with migraines my whole life and now my son does also. I ALWAYS ALWAYS have a bad headache or migraine on those days. I can even tell my husband in advance, well, I need to make sure I have this or that done by this day because I will be in the bed. Praying y'all are all feeling better soon.

  38. I have struggled with headaches and barometric pressure ALWAYS triggers me. Esp. when its going to rain.

  39. I tend to think the weather can trigger head aches and pressure in your face and head. I live in Louisiana and the weather changes here so suddenly that this happens often.
