As we celebrated our last school night, I couldn't think of a better way to spend the evening than eating popcorn and watching our favorite family movie of the month (here's a hint: there's a famous Dog involved). Lucy and Jack piled up in Erik's lap; Ella snuggled on the couch. It's the perfect night in my opinion.
I know we all have horror stories of burning popcorn in our microwaves, right? You leave the room for a quick minute, the bag and popcorn burns and then your house smells horrible for the next week! Don't worry, it happens to the best of us. Just the other day I set off the smoke alarm trying to fix myself an afternoon snack. Wouldn't you love to have some kind of technology that would alert you as to when your popcorn is done? Well, I found the perfect solution.
As I was making the popcorn tonight I got the chance to try out this new, super fun app from Pop Secret. The app is designed to listen as the popcorn pops and then it will signal when the popcorn has been perfectly popped. Seriously, how could it get any better than this? I was really excited to give it a try.
The app is crazy easy to use. You simply put your popcorn in the microwave, hold your phone near (but not on or in) the microwave, and then hit "start" on the phone screen. It was really fun to watch how the app actually kept track of the pops it heard and then alerted me as to when the popcorn was ready. When I opened my bags the popcorn was perfect and there were hardly any unopned kernels. I was a excited as a kid in a candy store. Try it out and let me know what you think. You can download the Perfect Pop app for free in the App Store* or find a link on PopSecretLabs.com
My kids sure weren't upset about all my test runs. They got to feast from the spoils of war. All the extra popcorn will be put into baggies and we will have handy snacks for the next few days. The night was a win-win for all!

it definitely would have to be a time at work - I think that's the worst time to burn popcorn - no one ever lets it go - and burnt popcorn really smells horrible!!!
ReplyDeleteI can't remember the worst time, personally, but my coworker burned it at work and it was awful! Maybe I should tell her about this app, haha! :D
ReplyDeleteSince that smell is so horrible I usually don't pop mine long enough and have lots of unpopped kernels. Definitely getting this app.
ReplyDeleteI actually tried making popcorn for a snack at the office once. The entire office building smelled like burned popcorn for the rest of the day. It was the last time I made popcorn at work! :)
ReplyDeleteI had only ever used the "popcorn" button at home and it worked perfectly so of course, I thought it would work perfectly in my dorm room! Umm nope. I made popcorn on the opposite side of the dorm hall, in my friends room and it smelled so bad for days, she had to wash many of her clothes just to get the smell out! And everyone on the floor was just as annoyed, as the smell spread like a wildfire :)
ReplyDeleteI once made homemade kettle corn and the sugar burned so badly I had to throw the pot away!
ReplyDeleteI've burned popcorn and the house smelled for days!
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, I burned popcorn at work. Let me tell you, that smell stuck around for what seemed liked days. Yuk! Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteI did it in the teacher's lounge and the smell leaked into the hall for all to smell. That was hard to live down because it smelled sooooo bad!
ReplyDeleteOne time I burned popcorn in my classroom...I regretted it all day, because my students kept saying, "It smells like burned popcorn in here." Obviously. LOL!
ReplyDeleteI think the worst is when I was pregnant, and I wanted to eat something salty and my LAST BAG was burnt!
ReplyDeleteThe worst was when my daughter was in-patient at LeBonheur and I burned the entire bag of popcorn...it was BAD! Could smell it the second you got off the elevators...oops!
ReplyDeleteI was left in charge of my 7 year old brothers. They convinced me they knew how to pop popcorn on their own. As I sat in the living room, I began to smell the nasty odor of burnt popcorn. They has pushed 40 minutes instead of 4 minutes. A moment I won't ever forget!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in elementary school I tried to make some popcorn that you stop halfway through and add flavoring to (I think I was making caramel) and then finish popping. I couldn't get the bag to stay closed after I added the flavor to it, so I decided to grab what I thought was a plastic clip on to hold it closed. I soon found out that there was definitely some metal in the clip. I just heard a loud BANG and my bag burst into flames! Luckily, I was the only one home and somehow managed to clear the smoke before my parents got back :)
ReplyDeleteI have burned popcorn way to many times! The problem I have now is I only pop half the bag because I am so scared of over popping. I just ate but I can't wait to try this app tonight! I love popcorn, I even have three types in my kitchen right now.
ReplyDeleteBurning it at work is the worst! Ill try the app!!
ReplyDeleteI remember burning popcorn as a kid, back before microwaves when we used to make it on the stove. I set up the smoke alarm and got in trouble with my mom. This app would be great to try!

We used to burn the popcorn on purpose because my grandma liked it that way :)
ReplyDeleteI had a co-worker who burned a bag of popcorn in the microwave at work and the whole office stunk! I don't have a device for the app.
ReplyDeleteThis App sounds like so much fun I cant wait to try it :-) I remember burning popcorn in college in the microwave I was unfamiliar with and when you ruined the popcorn I was so sad because I had no extra money for mistakes like that :-(
ReplyDeletei'll try the app - and I burned a bag horribly in my freshman dorm!
ReplyDeletehttps://twitter.com/DesMoinesDealin/status/342471151009808384
ReplyDeleteI've burned more bags of popcorn than I can count...I'll give the app a try for sure!
ReplyDeleteIn high school, I was popping popcorn in the teacher's lounge (where I wasn't supposed to be anyway!) and when I opened the bag, it was only half popped. So my dumb self stapled the bag shut and put it bag in the microwave. It caught fire (staples are metal!) and set off the smoke alarm for the whole school! I could REALLY use the app!
ReplyDeleteMy mom has burnt many a bag of popcorn since the microwave entered our lives as children. Too many times to remember. But I do recall the time she was defrosting a loaf of bread. Forgot to remove the metal twist tie and the glass of the microwave door shattered into millions of pieces. And the last two times i was at the hospital hotel, the fire alarms sounded and we all had to evacuate, in the middle of the night, because of burnt popcorn. Anyway, the app sounds handy.
ReplyDeleteMy husband loves microwave popcorn, but he ALWAYS burns it! I think he has so many things going at once that he turns on the microwave - without choosing a time - then moves on to something else. By the time the microwave 'dings', it's too late and the popcorn is toast - I think we waste more than we actually eat!!! We definitely need some help!
ReplyDeleteThe worst is when it burns at work ... the whole building smells like it ... Great app !
ReplyDeleteI haven't burnt popcorn because I tend to take it out way before it's done and have too many kernels left in the bag :( ... However, I did have one experience with burnt popcorn not long after coming back to work after I had Gastric Bypass surgery. Someone burnt a bag of popcorn in the break room, and I mean really and truly burnt the bag. Not sure if they hit the wrong button on the microwave or what but the entire bag literally caught fire and burned in the microwave. I have had issues with eating popcorn ever since. I guess it 'burned' my taste and combining that with the weird things that happen with Gastric Bypass, it's scorned my desire to eat popcorn at all :(
ReplyDeleteI work in a school where we are no longer allowed to pop popcorn because of the time someone (I promise it truly wasn't me!) burned the popcorn SO badly it caused the fire alarm to go off and the fire department had to come to the school! The hallways were hazy for the entire day and boy did it stink! The good part was we got to see some cutie firemen! *wink*
ReplyDeleteDate night with my now husband. I burned the Popcorn and he still ate it! I knew then he was a keeper!! He now pops the popcorn, and always gives me a hard time about that date!
ReplyDeleteIn the college dorm. I had several hundred upset girls. LOL
ReplyDeleteI burnt the last bag of popcorn during family movie night last weekend. Wish I would've had the app then! ;)
ReplyDeleteI burnt popcorn on my first day of work. Way to make an impression at the office! I could def. use this app!
ReplyDeleteI've set off fire alarm before by burning the popcorn so bad!!! What a neat app! I can't wait to try it!
ReplyDeleteambrewster06 at yahoo
My husband hates the smell of popcorn, so when I burn it, that's really bad.
ReplyDeleteI had a microwave in my college dorm even though they were not allowed. I put the popcorn in the microwave for 5 min and then left my room to get a drink. When I came back, not only did my room smell horrid, but I had to act like I didn't know where the smell came from....
ReplyDeleteWe like to do our popcorn on the stove and I have certainly burnt a few kernals doing that. It is sometimes tough to get the oil just right. Wonder if the app would work with stove popcorn!
ReplyDeleteI have burned it at work, which is embarrassing because it bothers everyone!
ReplyDeleteI burnt popcorn so bad one time it set my smoke alarm off. Gosh that smell stayed for hours.

We were on vacation in Colorado skiing years ago. I burned the popcorn in the microwave in the condo that we had rented. Smells really really bad. That was the one time that I was glad we were leaving the next day. The smell was really bad. I could absolutely use the app.
ReplyDeleteMy son loves microwave popcorn so we will be using this app. (I am a fain of air popped popcorn).
ReplyDeleteMy worst burnt popcorn story. The popcorn bag had a small hole and the buttery stuff leaked out, the mini fire destroyed a brand new microwave. Since then I am super cautious.
The worst time I ever burned popcorn was when I stayed at my then boyfriend's apartment many years ago, it set off the smoke alarm and all neighbors were freaked out. I sure would give this FREE app a try.

ReplyDeleteNo specific "worst" time - ANY time we're craving popcorn and I burn the last bag we have is bad!
ReplyDeletehttps://twitter.com/LAMusing/status/344257673107210240
ReplyDeleteBurning the popcorn in a open office setting....stunk up the whole place. Even fans did not help much.
ReplyDeletei did not give the app a try and the worst time i burnt popcorn was when i bought jiffy pop for camping....what a waste
ReplyDeleteI've burned more popcorn than I care to admit, the worst was when we were camping, I put the popcorn in the microwave in our travel trailer, went outside by the campfire (got distracted) and then smelled the aweful smell, that scent lasted a very long time in our trailer.
ReplyDeleteIt has been a very long time since I burned a bag of popcorn . I love popcorn and have it all the time. I know that it will be done in less than two minutes and I usually stay right in the kitchen so I can turn it off at just the right moment. I just can't bear to let any popcorn go to waste! I remember working at a car rental place and people burned popcorn all the time! It was awful!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in my early 20s I used to work in a small store where sometimes we would sort of sneak and make popcorn so that we could survive the afternoons. We often talked about how we had to make sure not to burn it, how we shouldn't be doing it anyway because of the smell; but we did it anyway. Of course, one day the owner (not the boss, the owner!) dropped by just in time to see smoke emitting from the microwave. Amazingly, we weren't fired. I would have fired me!

None of my kernels were popping on a really old bag of popcorn. Figured I'd put it in for about 30 seconds longer. Bad choice. Stinky kitchen for 2 days. Obviously, popcorn was bad at that point.
ReplyDeleteWhen I burn a bag of popcorn, it ends up in the trash. I can't even fathom eating it. My worst popcorn burning story is I burned a bag of popcorn.
