In Need of a Routine

Jack listening to the Frozen soundtrack as I try to catch a few more minutes of sleep at 6:30 am.

This summer has been the best summer of my adult life.  We have traveled, we have swam, we have played in the yard and we have fished.  We have stayed up late, we have slept in (sort of) and have completely thrown our schedule out of the door.  The only mandatory things that we have had to work around have been tutoring and physical therapy.  Those aren't really negotiable.

It's been an AMAZING summer.

But....it's the end of July and the beginning of school is just 14 days away.  Why is it that I can't help in a small, tiny way to be excited?  It's not that I want my kids to be away from me.  I actually love my kids being home.  I love all their friends being over too.  The more children in my house the happier I am.  Often times I get lonely when the kiddos are gone to school.  Upon some recent self-reflection I have decided that it's the schedule--the routine--that I miss.  Please tell me I'm not the only Mom who feels this way.  I'm a good Mom, really I am.

I will always remember this summer as the first after Lucy got sick that we actually started living again.  Throwing caution to the wind hasn't even been an option the past 3 summers.  This summer, however, was about enjoying what every day had to bring; watching Lucy swim, Jack collecting large amounts of bugs and Ella growing into a young lady with her friends.  I will remember this summer as the time I just let things go.

2 months of care-free living is just about enough though, right?  Bring on the routine and schedule.  I'm ready...at least until next summer!

  1. I work full time and my kids go to YMCA camp during the summer and I still long for a school routine. During the summer we usually run around in the evenings as much as during the day, but when school is in session, I like being home every night!

  3. YES! I agree 100% with you. I always get the back to school blues when my kids go back. I miss them terribly and love spending so much time with them. However I need the routine, it helps us all not just me. I do wish we had just a little more time together though. It seems summer is getting shorter and shorter.

  4. I agree. We do not go back until September. But I work 2 days a week as a special ed preschool teacher. I have 3 weeks off at the beginning of the summer and 2 at the end. The two days I work is so, so nice to be back on routine. They go to our church daycare/summer camp. My 6 yearold wants to go more and I might just agree! We end the summer with 2 weeks at the beach, I am ok with no routine there!!!

  5. My kids are grown and gone and I still miss the routine the school year brings. I always loved having the kids home but I always loved them going back to school too.

  6. You're not alone in your feelings, and you ARE a great Mom! I feel the same way; I have two boys (ages 11 and 9) and a 4-year-old girl. This summer has also been one of the best of my adult life, too... and on top of that, the summer has been "mild" for Louisiana! ;) I enjoy being with my kids, sleeping in, staying up late, movies and popcorn, the trampoline park, swimming at Grammy's house, swimming at my sister's house, snow cones and backyard badminton... But all that being said, I am beginning to feel that structure is needed... the kids are actually started to become "bored" more often; I think kids need and want the routine too, although they don't realize it! I always get the "back to school blues" as a Mom, but we become so busy so quickly that I don't have a lot of time to dwell on my melancholy emotions. And before you know it, it's Fall Break, then the holiday season, etc... And as you said, there's next summer to look forward to as well! My kids start school on Aug. 7, which I think is too early, but that's when "Summer" officially ends in my mind... "August" has become "Autumn" to me! :) Anyway, you're not alone in your feelings about routine and needing the structure... I completely get it.

  7. I love the freedom of summer and I love the routine of school. We need both in our lives. But we're not ready for school routine just yet since we've only had four weeks of summer break. I'm so glad this has been such a great summer for all of you!
