Our Easter Celebration

This Easter proved to be one of the most interesting in a long time.  We started Good Friday spending time with friends and family.  We dyed 1,486,537 eggs and all the kids had a wonderful time.

Later in the evening Erik and I went to LeBonheur to visit friends of our best friends, Nelson and Amanda.  Nelson's college buddy has a young son who was recently diagnosed with Medulloblastoma.  I swear I don't understand.  It makes me so very angry.  So much hurting in these little ones.  After dinner we ate at one of my favorite spots downtown, The Majestic.

Saturday we worked inside and outside the house getting ready for our Easter Egg Hunt.  We invited a few friends over, grilled burgers, opened a pinata and then hunted eggs in the dark.  Thanks to Pinterest, I found a super cool idea for an egg hunt where the eggs were filled with glow sticks.  Needless to say it was a lot of work but well worth every minute.  The kids thought it was amazing and had a blast!

Sunday morning proved to be a kicker, as I woke not bring able to move.  At all.  It had started Thursday with a stiff neck but by Saturday night had progressed to acute joint pain, swollen extremities and a nasty rash all over my body.  While I tried to get the kids ready for church (what little help I was) I debated over going to the ER.  I wrestled with the idea until I decided that no matter how miserable I was I would not miss Easter Sunday.  I'm glad I went to church, as it was a wonderful blessing, but I was so uncomfortable the whole time I was there.  So, anyway, I felt horrible and had no energy to fight Jack for pictures.  I probably have the worse Easter pictures ever.  Oh, well.  They will definitely be filled with a memory for sure!

Seriously, this is the best picture of this little wild child I was able to snap!
After church we had lunch and an Easter egg hunt at my parents.  I was able to stay for lunch, but by 2:00 I was headed to the ER.  Long story short and another doctor appointment today, I still have no answers.  I am being treated with heavy antibiotics in case I have Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.  I seem to think it may be fifths disease.  There are a gamut of auto-immune tests being run. I'm fine and already feel better after a Cortisone shot and starting a Medrol dose pack.  I'm tough!

I hope you had a wonderful Easter.  Christ is Risen.  He is Risen indeed!

p.s- thank you all for prayers for my grandfather and niece.  My grandfather had a good CT scan the other day and we are praising God for the good news.  Maddie has unfortunately been diagnosed with Celiac disease.  While it is a life altering diagnosis, it is not life threatening and is far better than many of the alternatives.

  1. When I read your first description of waking up ill with joint pain, etc., I immediately thought of Fifth's. I had it several years ago, and remember it exactly as you described. I thought surely I had some critical illness, only to find out it's generally a childhood thing they share so graciously! Are your fingers (knuckles, etc.) swollen? Lots of ibuprofen may help, too. I hope you continue to feel better.

  3. My daughter was diagnosed with Celiac disease almost exactly 4 years ago. Like you said - it is not devastating but definitely life altering. She was 9 (one month before her 10th birthday) and will be 14 in less than a month. You could not get her to eat anything she's not supposed to. I will say the biggest problems have been church functions and parties. (It is amazing how many youth events focus on pizza and donuts.) It is hard to get her to not feel left out or attention put on her, but the difference in her health is tremendous. We are very blessed to have a local Kroger (Atoka) that carries a tremendous amount of groceries for our children with special diet needs!

I will keep you in my prayers in hopes that you feel better soon. Mom has no time to be ill!

  5. Kate, You never cease to amaze and humble me. Your honesty and your love for our Lord has touched so many lives including my own! Your family has had WAY more than your share of illness in the past year but you never stop praising God and your faith shines through in the faith of your children! God has used your family and sweet Lucy in ways you will not know until you reach the Heavenly throne. May God continue to bless and thank you for opening your heart and your family to the rest of us.

  6. Lucy's dark hair is precious! She is such a cutie. You are a daily inspiration with your tough exterior Kate! I know you give it all to God on the inside to get through your days and we as a family continue to pray for all of you. Your Easter pics are precious, no worries there. Glad you, your Grandfather, and your sweet little neice are feeling better! Love and Prayers. Audrea Taylor

  7. There are some great resources out there for celiacs. Some great gluten free websites are elanaspantry.com, everydaypaleo.com (which she also has a great cookbook) and Paleo comfort foods is another great cookbook. Pinterest will also be very useful as you can just search specifically what you want on there. Glad it is nothing more serious!! She will be fine once you can just convince her to eat differently :) Glad y'all had a wonderful Easter! He is risen indeed!

  9. Happy Easter! It looks like ya'll had a great weekend... minus the joint pain. I hope the doctors get you some answers quickly and you're feeling better soon! Great news about your grandfather and Maddie being back on the mend. I know your sister will be so grateful for all the help you'll be able to provide as they adjust to Celiac and I bet you and Maddie have an extra special bond over it. A friend of mine has a young neice with celiac and she bakes up batches of GF cupcakes to keep in the freezer for b-day parties and events so her neice can have cake just like the other kids. So glad it's not something more serious. I was diagnosed with Celiac almost 6 years ago and I've always said- if you have to get a genetic disease... it's the one to have since one doesn't need any medicine to treat it. :)

  10. What a lovely weekend you've had! Still nice pics even if Jack didn't comply. Ella is so beautiful and Lucy's hair is coming back in so dark!

As for your illness it could have everything to do with your Celiac Disease. I have Crohn's Disease and I know that if I'm in a flare I get all of the same symptoms as you aswell. Hope you are feeling better soon!

    Happy Easter! :D

  15. My daughter is gluten intolerant and it is amazing what that can do to a child until it is figured out. Once they figure out how to make gluten free food it isn't too hard. We are one year into the process and there is new food being made gluten free all the time. Two of the best I have found is Gluten Free Bisquick and also Betty Crocker now makes gluten free cake mixes, brownie mixes, and I think there is also a cookie mix. They are really good.
