Love; True Love

True Love.  That's what my grandparents have.  It's what we all want.  It's the kind of love that lasts a lifetime--the kind of love that you dream of as a little girl.  I had the wonderful opportunity to sit with both of them today in the ICU.  Just us three.  All day long.  It was probably one of the best days of my life.

I watched my grandmother sit by his side and hold his hand.  When he was agitated and scared, she would whisper to him and calm him.  She would try to sleep, but every time he moved she jumped.  She prayed over him and cried.  We all tried to get her to go home tonight and she wouldn't budge.  The nurse told her, "Mrs. Rose, you need to go home tonight."  She replied, "How long have you been married?"  When the nurse answered "5 years," my grandmother said "Well, I've been married 65 years and I'm not going anywhere."

Erik and I don't have a perfect marriage.  Every day we work hard; that's what marriage is all about.  But we love each other and we are committed to making it work.  Lucy's illness has been hard on us.  The divorce rate of parents who go through a child's illness is alarming.  With God's help, we will one day be married 65 years just like my grandparents.  I love you Erik.  Thank you for all that you do for our family.

  2. That is absolutely so sweet! My grandfather passed away over thirty years ago and she remained completely devoted to him all the years after until she passed away last year. She lived to 99 and was ready to go see him again. I can only imagine the reunion was amazing! That devotion she had will stick with me forever and reminds me when things get a little rough that at he end of the day, me and my husband love each other and that will never change.

I will keep praying for your grandparents and your family.

  8. I'm so glad you got to spend the day with both of them. I got to spend time with my grandmother in her last 4 weeks of her life. I got to tell her everything I always wanted to say. She went to be with Jesus exactly 1 week after she and my grandfather celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary. I don't know what it's like to lose a grandfather but my only piece of advice is love him like crazy and enjoy however much time is left.

  9. I never have commented on your blog before but I felt touched by this post because my mom just passed away and I watched my dad hold her hand for the 3 days before it happened. They were married 46 years!
I am praying for your sweet lucy and your grandfather and your whole family everyday!
    Love from NY

  10. What a blessing and an example your grandparents are to your family. If I were your Grandma, I wouldn't go anywhere either. Sixty five years is a long time to be married. I am blessed to have my husband, and would love to be able to say we were married for 65 years; however, we were married when we were both 37 & 38 years old...so 65 is probably not an option. Praying for your Grandparents right now...that God would give them peace and understanding during this difficult time.

  11. Kate, this made me a little tears eyed, first I want to say I am praying for your granddad. My dad died of brain cancer and my parents were married 48 years and they showed me what true love was all about. She never left his side for the whole last year of his life. They went everywhere together. They never left the house without a kiss good bye and telling each other that they loved each other. They looked at each other as if they were still newlyweds. I have been married for 32 years and like you said no marriage is perfect but it is worth working for and I believe so many people give up to soon. My vows were taken with my whole heart and I love that your grandparents set a great example for so many around them to follow. I love that she didn't let them tell her to leave him because she knew he needs her. My mom laid down on the bed with my dad and said"it is okay to go now , I will be ok and within 25 minutes he let go" . He was waiting for her to let him know she would be okay. She is okay even though she has a broken heart she knows he is waiting for her as she is him. Thank you so much for letting me write a comment that turned into a post of its own, but you do thàt to me you and for that THANK YOU KATE. Good luck
