Doctor Mom
We wake at 6:25am Monday through Friday. Warm chocolate milk for Ella and Lucy, cold milk for Jack. Everyone snuggles in the bed as they watch the last 5 minutes of whatever is finishing on Disney Junior and then patiently waits on Doc McStuffins to come on for our last 20 minutes of snuggle time before we get ready for school. This is our morning routine--has been for the last 7 years; same routine, different shows.
Maybe because it hits so close to home, but there's something about Doc and her innocent knowledge of fixing boo-boo's that appeals to me. Maybe its because its how I felt after Lucy got sick. Now, after 2.5 years, you can call me Dr. Mom, Mom, MD, Momcologist. Pick your favorite. I answer to them all. I can change central line dressings, administer potent IV medicines, change feeding tubes, monitor for seizures and feel as if I know the complete list of pharmaceuticals in the hospital pharmacy.
While those things are, thankfully, in our past I still keep busy changing band aids, doling out ibuprofen and administering ice packs. Through all of this, my all time favorite Doc McStuffins moments are when kisses and hugs are the only medicine that works. That's when I know I have done my job as a mother. Those are the only two medical skills I was born knowing to do. And I do them very well, if I do say so myself.
No one could have ever prepared me for being a Mom. It is by far, hands down the hardest job on Earth. No one else is expected to carry as many job titles as we are while being expected to do them well. If you knew what was going to be expected of you as a mother none of us would have ever had children. Even if a few of us were brave enough to try it we sure wouldn't have had more than one! But that's not how we were made. We march through motherhood bravely wearing the suit of honor called "Mom" and rise to challenges on a daily basis that would break even the strongest man.
We are made different--us Moms. We were set apart to love, care, nurture and protect our children. And we do it with a fervor and determination that only a mom's love can provide. So, how about you? Do you have any great stories? What about you and your children? Do you role play at home after you watch Doc McStuffins?
I'm excited about new episodes of Doc McStuffins (starting Sept. 6th on Disney Junior), mainly because I love it when Lucy looks at Jack and says "One time I had an ouchy like her doll and I had to go see a doctor just like Dr. McMuffins." How cute is that? One day I'm sure Jack will bore of hearing her stories and one day I'm sure she will pronounce Doc's name correctly. But right now, you can find us snuggling every morning watching to see what medical peril awaits the next Doc McStuffins toy.
Tell me what you do to keep your kids healthy on the go with snacks and other activities for your chance to win a $100 VISA gift card.
Be sure to check out the Disney’s "Doc McStuffins" site to explore the new episodes that will show every Friday in September starting on 9/6 on Disney Junior. And watch great tips for keeping your kids healthy from Doc McStuffins herself here!

We do grapes and string cheese for snacks on the go. I've also tried to encourage physical activities like jumping rope, situps, etc. when we're waiting at another child's activities vs playing with the ipad for entertainment as much as we used to.
ReplyDeleteWe take fruit and yogurt with us as on the go snacks.

We stay healthy by washing our hands on a regular basis!
ReplyDeleteI give my son a daily vitamin and have him wash his hands every time he walks in the house.
ReplyDeleteHand washing is definitely tops for keeping healthy. We wash our hands whenever we come home. I also work hard to remind the kids not to share drinks (and germs).
ReplyDeleteI keep my kids healthy on the go by choosing to take the stairs when we can and avoiding fast food.
ReplyDeleteBasically I am a crazy person who carries around fruit, Clif bars and little containers of nuts and cut-up carrots all of the time.

Hi Katie-
ReplyDeleteI carry hand sanitizer in my purse and keep a can of clorox wipes in the car for quick cleaning. I also pack our own healthy snacks while we're out and about. It prevents me from stopping at a fast food restaurant while on the go!
I keep my children healthy on the go by creating healthy snacks such as almonds, rice cakes, dried fruit and cheese strings and of course water. I encourage them to be healthy by taking them for long walks, playing and leading by example!

ReplyDeleteWe try to stay healthy on the go by not giving in to fast food temptations (easier for them than me!) We haven't seen Doc McStuffins before but it looks fun.

Aside from washing hands, we eat fruits and veggies daily! As well as yogurt to ward off any bugs!!
ReplyDeleteI'm addicted to purrell and hand washing. My kids get so frutstrated that I make them was their hands 100 times a day. My girls absolutely love Doc McStuffins! My youngest told me the other day she needed to drink more so she didn't get dehydrated like Stuffy did on the "stuffin show".
ReplyDeleteHand washing and we always try to remember to carry hand sanitizer whenever we are out to use after touching things others have touched.
ReplyDeleteWe try to bring full water bottles and simple snacks when we are on the go. With a family of five, it is easy to pass germs around, so I also keep a container of hand sanitizing wipes in the car. God bless!
ReplyDeleteWe try to eat well balanced meals and keep active.
ReplyDeleteWe like to keep baggies of fresh cut-up fruits and veggies on hand and within our son reach. They are healthy and easy to grab on the way out the door!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win!

ReplyDeleteHand sanitizer and tissues galore help me keep my family healthy. However, when a cold does strike, chicken noodle soup, pudding, favorite movies, cozy robes, and warm pajamas just out of the dryer
ReplyDeleteI don't have kids, but my parents always kept nuts and carrots sticks around for snacks and fresh fruit for my "sweets" cravings :) When I got sick there was a lot of hand washing!
ReplyDeleteI never kept junk food in the house and we very, very rarely had take out type foods. We had a garden so my daughter could always have fresh fruits and veggies. I'd pack a few healthy snacks for trips and always packed ahealthy lunch for school.
ReplyDeleteI love to take my kids to play at the park to keep them active and get the exercise they needed. Soccer, basketball, hide and seek, running, chasing, etc. So much fun.

On the go means sanitizing wipes, convenient fruit snacks like grapes and being prepared with band aids just in case of an owie. Keeping active with camping, hiking, biking and swimming helps keep them healthy.
