Copper's Mystic Dream

Welcome to the family, Copper!  Everyone, please say "hi" to Copper's Mystic Dream.  We are madly in love with him already.  He is a Sheltie, a Shetland Sheepdog.

I never in a million years thought I would have a house dog.  First of all, I've never wanted one. Second of all, I knew Erik would never, ever agree to it.  In his words, though, "after last summer I just realized that you only live once."  Having a puppy is something our girls have wanted for a long time.  Ella, Lucy and Jack are beyond thrilled.  If I'm completely honest, I'm pretty happy, too.

Thank you Erik!

  3. Hi Copper!! What a beautiful puppy! All you need now is some sheep (I am from a sheep ranch, and I am rather fond of sheep dogs)

  5. I check on you daily but rarely write. But I absolutely LOVE Jack. He is so cute and that sweet smile holding the puppy was just adorable. He still has those cheeks that I loved when my kids were little. Can't wait to hear stories about the puppy.

  8. Good for you guys! Now, can you convince MY husband of the value of a house dog for me...a semi-invalid with Osteoarthritis and Fibromyalgia, Chronic pain & fatigue. That seems to be a wonderful pup. Just watch out for shoes etc. My sister an a "Kong" and when she left the house, she put Misty in her crate with the stuffed-with-peanutbutter-kong. No problems with that. The crate was also used for discipline like barking for no good reason etc. Have fun training, too, sit, stay, come, roll-over, pray, loads of fun things to learn.

  9. You have made a wonderful decision. Besides the cuddling and hilarity of a dog in the family, a dog also provides the safest, most secure listening companion that any child could ever hope for. Many an issue was worked out by rubbing the soft underside of a beloved dog's ears. The. Best. Therapy. Ever.

  10. I want to get a Chihuahua like I had growing up; it would be like reliving happy memories but my husband refuses to allow us to get a dog; he says pets are more trouble than they're worth as they're noisy, smelly and destructive and just end up being a burden. If I could have one wish it would be that I could have a dog again.

  12. I have read your blog for a long time and have never commented as I had no way to relate other than to continually pray for your family. Now I can, I am happy to say I have two shelties and they are two years old. I got them together as puppies and my children absolutely adore them. They become the families best friends. Enjoy!

  14. Your dog is ADORABLE! Congrats on the new addition. As a fellow mama of young kids and dogs, random unsolicited advice: Its important for the puppy to see your kids as pack leader. One easy way to do that is for them to feed the dog. My son and daughter take turns morning and night feeding the dogs and make them sit and wait until they are "released" to eat the food. Its a great way to teach impulse control/train a dog, and also the dogs respect the kids in a different way. Here is a little video explaining what I mean. My kids love doing this with our dogs. My 4 year old has them sit in front of the food for close to a minute before saying "release!" with a flourish. Way cool. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJ3Kbf0iDss
