Neurosurgery Check

Today we had to take Lucy to St. Jude for a post operative check up.  We always actually enjoy these visits because it gives us a captive audience with Dr. B.  If only for 5 minutes, we have him all to ourselves.  We try to gleam as much information from him as possible without annoying him with our game of 20 questions :)

Lucy had a weigh in.  Drum roll......... 17 kilos!!!!!  That's 37.4lbs, baby!  38 lbs is what Lucy weighed the day she was diagnosed.  February 23, 2011.  She is almost there.  With the way she has been eating lately I bet she hits it by next week.  I am going to buy stock in Eggo's waffles and syrup.

Daddy got to come with us today and that was a special treat.  Lucy was very excited he was there and I was pretty thrilled, too.  Having an extra hand just takes a little bit of pressure off of me to remember everything the doctors say and I always forget to ask certain questions when I am alone.

The best news of the day is that her most recent pathology and cytology reports came back and there was NO sign of cancer or infection in her brain.  When the holes were drilled in her skull the fluid that was expelled was a little questionable.  I haven't really mentioned it to anyone because honestly, it was just easier to not talk about.  There was a collective sigh of relief in the room once Dr. B told us the news.  Thank you God!  We still don't have an answer as to why she retained the fluid in the first place, which unfortunately means that we don't have a definitive way of preventing it from ever happening again.  We will be standing vigil though.  Always looking for changes.

My eyes are blurry tonight.  I'm sure it has nothing to do with the mountain of medical bills and EOB's that I poured over all night.  Hmmm.....

And thank you all for the well wishes for Ella.  She is feeling much better, but she is milking this for all it is worth.  Bless her heart!  We are happy to oblige, as she has played second fiddle for almost 2 years now.  Oh, and I know you guys think I'm an idiot.  I'm really not.  I understood that having Ella's tonsils removed would not guarantee she wouldn't get strep again but I have to be honest and tell you her doctor sure made it sound is if it wasn't very likely.  Oh, well.  "It's all good" (in the immortal words of Pete the Cat--Lucy's new favorite character.)

  6. Awww my friend bought me Pete the Cat and my son and I love that book! :)
Congrats on a good appt today! I need a thumbs up button on this thing :)
I hate those nasty medical bills and EOBs especially when they have some random doctors name on it because they ran the blood work or checked the scan.... My husband always says that it is like his second job going through all those things. Lots of luck and hopeful for smooth sailing on getting through the bills.

    Blessings...

  8. So happy to hear the good news! I agree with Pete the Cat...it's all good. Going the the EOB's is a full-time job all by itself. My husband refused to allow me to see them after my surgery because he knew I would go crazy trying to organize, check and cross-reference them. Hoping to hear more good news about Lucy, Ella and Jack.

  11. I'm so glad to hear the good report on Lucy!!! Give that girl another Eggo! I'm also thankful that Ella is beginning to feel better. She looked so pitiful in the picture with those pink cheeks. If we could dig you out of the paper, we'd be doing super. Prayers continue as always.

  12. My kids love Eggo waffles too. I just discovered Pumpkin waffles as a seasonal flavor. I might have to buy a bunch for when they disappear! If she likes pumpkin, you should look for them. We also put peanut butter before the syrup on our regular waffles. If Lucy likes peanut butter it might add some calories.

And we love Pete the Cat too. My son bought it at the book fair last year for his little sisters. I am about to buy another one. I love my red shoes, I love my red shoes!

  16. So thankful at how Lucy is progressing. We continue praying for her, your famiy and the medical staff. Re the strep thing....we have seen personally with our children, g-children and g-g-children that the strep germ seems to hide in the tonsils and once they were removed there was little return of strep infection, if any. I know it's not a guarantee. On the bills, also, our experience has been as long as we made even small, regular payments that our accounts were not turn over to the collection angency. Just sharing our experience as we continue to life y'all up to the Lord

  21. Thank you for always sharing the updates with us... the good and the bad. Lucy's story has truly made me whole-heartedly believe in miracles. I know you might not be up for this, but have you ever thought of a donate button on your blog? I have looked for one, but I was not able to find it. I can understand how it might be out of your comfort area, but I know that myself, and Im sure many other readers would like to help where we can.

  23. This post sure made my morning! What wonderful news!! No cancer...those are some pretty miraculous words. Kate, I know this wasn't the summer that you had dreamed of...but could you have ever even dreamed what actually did happen this summer?? From the lowest of lows in early June to a beautiful, smiling, 37.4 lb. cancer-free Lucy today...that is a "Big M" Miracle...the kind you dream of, but, at least for me, is difficult to comprehend. Lucy is living proof that God is still in the Big M miracle business in a really big way. Thank you so much for continuing to share your precious family with us.
Loads and loads of continued prayers for you guys!
