A Lazarus Moment

I would never try to compare anything in Lucy's life to the great miracles that happened in the Bible.  HOWEVER..today's event was as epic as any Lazurus moment in my opinion. You can watch this video that I took and see a little girl who was basically in a coma for 5 days open her eyes and talk.  YES!!!  Talk!!!

Her interaction with us lasted about 15 minutes and then she was done.  She almost immediately went back to sleep and we haven't seen her eyes since.  If there had not been 10 people in the room (not all related to me) I don't think anyone would have ever believed it.  Everyone was in tears.  Even our nurse!

While those 15 minutes will forever be etched into my mind, today continued to be a day of ups and downs.  We had a Family Care meeting with our entire team of doctors and were bombarded with tons of information, much more than my feeble mind can process.  There are still so many unknowns in this whole equation.  I am going to take a moment and try to lay out the facts in note form.  This is for my own good as I  know that one day I will need to look back at this and remember the whole picture.

What we know:
  • An event happened in Lucy's body that caused 40 C (over 104.5 F) fever that persisted for more than 48 hours.
  • This event caused her body to shut down and the high fever is likely to have caused the seizures.
  • She has lost most of her ability to communicate, minus brief comments and interactions.  All of which I must note are purposeful and meaningful.
  • We do know that her vision has been greatly impaired.  We think she might be able to see something, although we are not sure what or how much.  She can not make out faces and can't even tell you if you are holding up a ball in front of her face, but she seems to be tracking.
  • During periods of awake time she is consumed with frustration, fear and confusion.  She cries for long periods of time although she does not appear to be in pain.

Theories and Facts:
  • The doctors are beginning to think that maybe Pink Eye led to a viral infection that leaked into Lucy's brain.  Possibly through the shunt.  This we will probably never know.
  • Today's EEG revealed NO seizure activity and NO brain damage.  PRAISE GOD!!!!!!!!
  • Today's EEG did reveal a very tired brain that had a lot of recovering to do.
  • The doctors do not feel as if the eye sight issues are permanent.  This, however, can not be verified until an Opthamologist is able to do a thorough exam.  That will probably not happen until Wednesday.
  • Most, if not all, of Lucy's deficits are reversible and Lucy should make a pretty strong recovery.
It is known that our bodies have a memory system where neurological events are stored.  For example, if a stroke victim were to catch the common cold he or she might be knocked down for several weeks and might exhibit some symptoms of the inital stroke (slurred speech, paralysis).  What the doctors are theorizing is that when Lucy's body contracted this virus (if that's what it really was) her body's memory took her back to the time of her Meningitis and Thiamine Deficiency.  She has most of the clinical symptoms of Meningitis and she has lost her eyesight like she did with the Thiamine issue.  Again, this is theory and we are just working with the best information we can put together.

There are so many things that I don't know.  There are so many things that I may never, ever know.  But what I do know today is that I witnessed a miracle.  I saw life in my baby's eyes that I never thought I would see again.  I saw a little girl who was created with so much fight not even a life threatening illness or a cancer reoccurance can keep her down.  Today was amazing.

For the past week Erik and I have taken turns holding Lucy in a chair for hours on end.  We each hold her until either our bladder is ready to bust or our bodies just can't take it any longer.  The very thought of putting her in her bed is more than I can take.  When we have laid her down we have been convinced that it would be our last time to ever hold her.  We have spent many nights preparing to wake up to a child who has passed on to heaven.

But God continues to amaze.  He continues to answer our prayers.  He continues to use Lucy's little life to touch so many people.  I compared this emotional, mental and physical race we are running to a Tsunami.  Not a wave that a surfer might ride to reach shore quickly.  No, a tsunami.  One that starts in the middle of the ocean and travels thousands and thousands of miles with no shore in sight.  And quite honestly, I don't even know what shore are we headed for!

The reality is we have a very, very sick child.  We know that the 15 minutes we got out of Lucy today were amazing, but there are 1440 minutes in a day.  You do the math.  It's not very impressive.  But those few short minutes were enough to give me hope that I just might get to take my baby girl home and actually have some quality time together as a family.  It might just happen.  That in itself would be a miracle.

We will be in the hospital for 10 more days.  We are going to begin some simple forms of PT, OT and speech tomorrow.  While we are here we are going to try to re-train Lucy to eat.  If we could get out of here without a feeding tube it would be amazing!  What a blessing to get to spend our time together without that worry and fear.

I have been blown away and encouraged beyond belief by the hundreds of comments that have been left for our family.  I am humbled that so many people love our little girl.  She really is our "light."  I will never stop believing for the ultimate miracle.

Never stop praying.

  10. AMAZING!!!! An absolute miracle. Watching that video was one of the most wonderful things and a true testimony to God's grace and his ability to create miracles in our world. I am so happy to see that Lucy woke up, even if for a short time. I am so thankful to our awesome God!
I continue to pray for Lucy and your family. I continue to thank God for giving you the strength to be such an inspiration to so many. I looked back on your blog today from the beginning (I read it last September when I learned Lucy's story after our move to Tipton County). But today I read of a time in 2009 when you were speaking of some mothers who were going through things that no mother should have to endure and you prayed that you could go through it in the inspirational way that they had (it was a time when you had no idea what your future would hold and the journey you would have to undertake)......I just want you to know that you have been such an inspiration to me. I don't feel I could ever be strong enough to go through what you are and as God gives us what we could handle, I will only know when the future comes, but your strength and endurance has made me a better mom and a better Christian.
I will continue to pray for Lucy and your entire family.
I thank you for sharing your family with us, you deserve every moment and the privacy that any family wants/needs during these times but know that making your story available for us has truly blessed people all over the world. Thank you, Kate!!!!!

  16. With every word you write, I can feel the love you have for precious Lucy. You say Lucy's 15 minutes out of the day weren't impressive, but any mother would celebrate those 15 minutes. As a mother of 3 children myself, I say celebrate that miracle!! Every breathe she takes, every sound she makes is impressive. GO LUCY GO!! You can do it girl! I believe that when you are so weary and tired, God gives you those 15 minutes of wonderful to show you that he's still with you. We are still praying for Lucy's miracle in Georgia.

  30. Kate and family, I was so absolutely blown away by that video. I have been so worried about Lucy that I find myself praying for her almost every moment of the day. I too think God is showing us what the power of prayer can do. I'm going to keep on praying and asking God to show us even more miracles to come. Today I told my daughter (who is 7) all about Lucy and she was so upset that you live in Tennessee and we are here in Wisconsin. She said awww I wanted to go and see her and give her a hug. No doubt prayers are going up from not only many of us parents, but our kiddos who are learning to love Lucy as much as we do.

    GO LUCY GO!!!!

  38. SO amazing to see! I have been following Lucy for many months and have been crying with you & this whole blogging community for days. Tonight it was so nice to cry tears of joy. Today I was riding my bike up a particularly nasty hill and was in a bit of agony- all I could think was I would petal forever and stay in this state of pain if it meant I was taken any pain away from your family. Seems like an impossible concept and unlikely that Lucy's miracle and my ride happened simultaneously but just in case, I am taking on that hill again tomorrow!

  46. I just read your post and watched the video, and sobbed and sobbed. Kate, my kids and I prayed "SPECIFICALLY" this early morning that Lucy would respond and say something that would be encouraging for you and your family today. We prayed that your time today would be extra special through some interaction with Lucy! I cannot believe this when I read this! Amazing! I really almost fell out of my chair when I read this! Praise the Lordd! Praise to the Lord for this special moment you had with her! He loves you all so much and IS here with you. He cares about all the details Kate! We will continue to pray, and more specifically that Lucy can come home so you can all spend that family time together in the intimate place of your home. Throughout the day, your sweet Lucy and family is deep on my heart and in my thoughts. Thankyou so much for posting and sharing this tonight. So special she was able to have a few minutes of conversation today. What a testimony to our Great God who hears the thousands of prayers around the world for your sweet girl, and cares so intimately and deeply about these precious moments with Lucy!

  64. My heart has literally been aching for you all and I open your blog to see if you posted worrying what the post may say... but you are right! What a blessed miracle. Since you requested it I have prayed for Lucy's eyesite to return. The video is simply amazing!!! THANK YOU for allowing us - mere strangers - to witness that miracle. You didn't have to. You could have kept it private. But it lifted my spirit so much! Your post the other day asked that we not let all this be in vain. That we not forget in a few years time. This has altered my course as I imagine it has for so many of your followers. It isn't an option to forget. I am NOT WORTHY of this lesson. I would rather not know what I know through your suffering. Not one person is worthy of Lucy's suffering. I don't know why God allows bad things to happen. But I do know that it will NEVER be in vain. Your "story" is one that Christians everywhere need to listen to. God is there in the good and the bad. We can be mad at Him. We can question. Christians are not protected from the bad. But faith CAN get us through. Kate, I am so proud of you. Thank you for sharing your life with us so that we can be better people. So that as a Christian I can continue the mission of treating others as Christ would and know that everyone has a story. Of varying degrees everyone suffers. But through it all WE are His hands and feet and we take care of one another as He would. Blessed be! Thank you for this post! I am on cloud 9 for you and my prayers will continue.

  69. Oh Kate, thank you so much for sharing your very personal video with us. It was truly lovely!!!! I think you have the most beautiful and soothing voice and I imagine that you are so very comforting to Lucy when you speak to her.
I don't know why I'm compelled to share a recent God moment I had when it seems so inconsequential compared to what you have experienced. I will try to give the condensed version and I hope you don't mind my sharing. A few weeks ago I took my son's cell phone (only to be used in emergencies) away because I didn't want him to lose it before he goes away to camp this summer. So I put it away for safe-keeping and promptly forgot where I put it. I tore the house apart searching to no avail for 2 weeks. (it was a lot of wasted and frustrating time) Well, on one of the days that you posted some unhappy news, I was sitting at the computer crying and praying and the question why was I so upset about the lost phone came to mind. My answer was that I needed it so that I could know that my son could reach me if he needed me and I could find a way to help him. But then it dawned on me that God is even closer than I could be with a cell phone and as much as I love my kids, He loves them more and even though I want them to call me if they need help, He should be the first one they call when they need help and He can provide them with immediate assistance at any time. I thought this was such a wonderful lesson/reminder that I need to completely trust God and make sure that my kids know without a doubt that they can always turn to Him. I shared my story with them when they got home from school and wrote each of them a letter with the same message that I left in their rooms for them to ponder later. And I found the phone the very next day. Maybe because I let go of my own need to feel that I'm keeping the children safe and put my trust for their safekeeping in God's capable hands? I really thought I had been doing that but I guess we can't completely trust God and try to do things our own way too.
I pray for all of you often and lots of times I pray particularly for your strength in holding things together. I hope that my story blesses you with encouragement.
Will continue to pray and so happy that you had a joyful experience to hold onto.

  77. I know I don't usually post, mainly because I am in tears and could not type if I wanted. I wanted you to know that beautiful Lucy's story has changed my view of so many aspects of life. You are such a strong woman. An inspiration really. I strive to be the mother you are. And to God be the glory!! Praise Him for the miracles you get to witness! I pray for your family daily. I will continue to pray that you get to have your precious time at home. And per your previous post, I will never forget the impact that a beautiful little girl named Lucy and her family have made on my life. I can honestly tell you that I take more time with my kids now. And I thank God for more things that previously I had taken for granted. Thank you for opening my eyes to life really. I had let so much consume so much of my time. You guys made me realize that it's not all promised...not all flowers and sunshine. Thank you for making me reconnect with God and my family.

    Hugs and Loving thoughts,

  94. I had the longest day at work yesterday and had no time to check for updates on Lucy but she was on my mind. When I got home very late, the first thing I did was to sign on to get the latest news about her. Seeing the pictures of her outside and knowing she wasn't responding to that stimulus was disheartening. I went to bed and prayed for a true miracle for Lucy. This morning I see this glorious post with a even MORE glorious video starring little Miss Lucy!! I could not be more happy for you, for Ella, for Erik. I will continue to pray for her recovery. You keep holding your baby girl....nobody hugs you like your Mama does and I sure that has given great comfort to Lucy.

  96. Kate, I absolutely loved the video of your sweet Lucy during her miracle moment! I have prayed fervently for your family, specifically over the last two weeks. I went to bed last night praying specifically for you & woke up with your family still on my mind... What an absolute blessing it was to see what the Lord had done yesterday!! I am in the middle of teaching VBS this week, and today our bible story is on Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. First on the faith of Mary & Martha - then on the miracle that came for Lazarus because of their faith in Jesus! I have no doubt that the Lord is holding you in the palm of His hand, even when it feels like He is so far away. Our theme for today is "No matter how you feel...Trust God!" I don't come from any kind of understanding of the depth of emotions you are experiencing and have experienced since Lucy's diagnosis, but I do believe that the Lord wanted me to share that with you! I pray continuously for peace for your precious mind and heart. I don't know that understanding will ever come, but I am confident that the Lord will give you peace. Know that you, your husband, your kids, and your family & friends are being showered in prayer continuously. Thank you for being so willing to share your story! Praying for a miracle from our Heavenly Father!

  112. 'Only believe and you shall see the glory of the Lord.'.God's word is truth above all other words. Do not take what appears to be fact to the natural mind as the status quo. Fact is governed by mans' ability and knowledge. God is able to do far more than what man( even doctors ) is able to do. Do not let reasoning and only believing what the human mind believes prevent the miracle from God from happening. Lord, remove the prince of Persia from hindering the miraculous healing that You have prepared for Lucy. Amen, thank You Father in Jesus name.

  117. when I started reading your post this morning my whole body broke out in chills. I have a daughter lucy's age, and have been praying for lucy all throughout the day yesterday and last night. at 1 point I was pleading with the lord and mentioned lazarus by name! we serve a god of miracles, a god that answers prayers specifically, a god who loves your family so intently, that he would take a prayer of a stranger that just happened upon your story at what seem to be the end, and showed up in the exact way that was prayed for. hold on tight he's not done, and whatever the outcome glory to god in the highest!

  133. One more time Lucy is used by God to show us that HE is in control! HE has the final decision on our lives. Proof that we must continue to lay Lucy at the fee of Jesus and allow HIM to have total control. She is such a little fighter....God has a plan for your angel and HE is showing you that HE isn't finished yet. HOPE remains in the small things that she accomplishes whether five, ten or fifteen minutes. Each ray of hope offers a sign. Know that so many prayers are being offered up on behalf of your family that God knows the love and joy and blessing Lucy and your family has been. Cancer is an ugly demon........but this battle is not over!
God is in control!Krull & Rose family.....HE is on your side regardless of what may come. In even the darkest moments HE stands strong and has you in HIS palm. 160. I saw the pictures of you and Lucy yesterday and just wept. My heart just broke for the expression on both of your faces. The Holy Spirit quickly reminded me that His ways are not our ways. I then turned my grief for you into a time of praise and thanks for the opportunity to take that sweet darling outside again. I gave all 3 of my girls a big hug, my oldest daughter crying with me. Last night, as I lay in bed, I was hit with an overwhelming urge to pray for Lucy and your family. I prayed, but as I went to close my prayer, everything in me said no, don't stop. I continued to pray, falling asleep in the process. I was thrilled to see the post this morning! I just wanted you to know that even though we have never met, I AM PRAYING for Lucy and your whole family. Her battle is touching people in a way that only God can use. Much love to you!!!!!

  161. A friend of mine who has been following your blog asked her facebook friends to pray for Lucy and your family. I spent so much time last nite reading about your family and what Lucy has been going through. I cried and I prayed. I thanked God for the health of my children; the health which I take for granted a majority of the time. We serve a mighty God and what He did for Lucy today is only a glimpse of what He can do. I will continue to pray for Lucy's healing and your peace and strength. Thanking God for the miracle that He performed today!!!

  163. Woot!! Praise YOU JESUES!! Seeing Lucy look at the camera and hearing her talk made my heart burst!! How so adorable and sweet to see Ella's love for her sister. Ella, you are a real gem!

What a joy to read what you wrote! Jesus will restore her eyesight! Pressing in for 100% health and NO cancer at all!

Kate and Erik, hang in there you guys are amazing parents. I continue to pray that God will strengthen you and that you will feel His presence in the room with you. That He will continue to support you and manifest Himself to you.

What an emotional ride this is and you describing this as a Tsunami gives a great visual. Hope is what we have to hold on to. We hope in a Saviour we have not seen yet through the Holy Spirit we know He exists. I am so thankful for hope and restored hope. Hoping with you all that Lucy will go home soon and continuing to hope for a miracle of no cancer ever again in Lucy.

May I have permission to share the video of Lucy on my blog?

Praying and praying and I won't stop.

  170. Awesome. I wish I had the words to say, but right now all I can think of is "Thank you,God!" Thank you, Kate, for posting the video. I just loved it when she said she was feeling "good" and said it with gusto! I know that these next 10 days with Lucy still in the hospital will mean taking things one day at time, one hour at a time, maybe even one moment at a time. But to see the fight in this precious little girl was so inspiring! The Bible Study "Experiencing God" talks about us joining God in His work. I would say that Lucy is joined with God and He is definitely working through her life. What a tremendous witness she is. Continuing to pray with a renewed purpose today! What an awesome event!

  173. "How great is our God, sing with me, How great is our God, and all will see how great, how great is our God!" I heard this song today shortly after reading about Lucy's miracle. God continues to work in Lucy's life. He hears the millions of prayers being lifted to the heavens. He showed a tangible sign of hope for all to see. How great is our God! Thank you Lord for what you have shown the Krull family! I pray that the Lord will continue to bless the time you have together and to allow Lucy to have more periods of alertness. Thank you for sharing this precious moment with your blog family! I am sure this has renewed many of us who have felt your burden, though we aren't experiencing the daily struggle. To God be the glory in all circumstances! Bless you all ---Love, Kori

  180. Your writing is beautiful! Through it your love for Lucy pours out! Your description of a tsunami does portrait the time by a loved one's side, when life is questionable and on the edge of that huge wave heading somewhere. I believe God is holding and healing dear Lucy close by Him for now. Thanks for sharing your miracle with us as we pray for more of those special moments for you, when Lucy opens those beautiful eyes daily!
    God's peace to you,

  185. What a fantastic video to see! She is just a precious little sweetheart and I'm so thrilled that Ella was there to see her sister's beautiful eyes again! Still thinking and praying for you constantly!

  186. Dear Sweet Kate, Thank you for sharing this video of precious Lucy! She still has her spunk and that beautiful smile that melts my heart every time I see it. The expression and smile on Ella's face didn't need words either, you could tell how happy she was to hug her sister, and have her respond to her. Lucy was able to relate in her own way, that she is still that same beautiful, determined little girl, even though she is so sick right now, and she appeared to be comfortable. God works in mysterious ways, and this was a true example! If only for a mere 15 mins. you were able to smile, and interact with Lucy. But, to also share her with us, was just a sign of how generous, and caring you truly are. You know all the love and prayers that are being sent to your family, and to take the time and sensitivity to allow us into your special family moment , was a very generous act. You are a very special and caring lady! Thank you, and may God continue to Bless you with his messages and Love!

Sending much Love, and Butterfly kisses to Lucy and you all,
    A Mom-Mom in NJ

  190. Dear Kate and family! I know those 15 minutes seemed very brief to you all, BUT, God just showed you that He is still in charge and still in the Miracle business! Praise God!!! Your "light" Lucy has changed me as a mother. I was obsessed with keeping a company ready house before I found/started praying for you all. Now we eat popcycles for breakfast sometime, blow bubbles everyday, play chalk on the patio and look for ladybugs. All the things our Piper loves! There are a few dishes in the sink and the hardwood forever needs to be swiffered, but I know that I won't remember those things in a hundred years and neither will she! May God continue to give you peace and Miracles beyond your imagination!!!

We continue to pray for your family and for more Lucy miracles, small and BIG. You've got so many people cyber hugging you! :) May you have another blessed day!!
