The Art of Distraction

Tomorrow is Lucy's scan day.  Scaniexity has set in.  I am not nervous, just anxious.  So, today my only goal was to keep myself busy.  The morning started with early tutoring for Lucy and a haircut for me, followed by a few errands run in town.  Thank you Phil Ramsey for my gorgeous picture of Jack and a special thank you to Camille for the very nice gift.  Thank you notes will follow.

Then we headed to Memphis for dentist appointments for both girls.  Ella was scheduled to have her upper appliance taken out and guess what else....

My baby girl got braces.  I think they make her look so old.  My heart is a little hurt tonight.  My baby girls isn't my baby anymore.  Ugh.  I HATE it!!

Lucy was scheduled for a teeth cleaning.  I was really dreading it for a couple of reasons.  One, she hates to have her teeth brushed.  I think they are still so sensitive due to not being used for so long that she just cries every time she sees a toothbrush.  Secondly, there were many days in the hospital when brushing teeth was just a battle I didn't fight.  Erik and I were prepared to hear that she had many cavities and that her teeth were in horrible shape from the acid erosion from vomiting so much.  Thankfully, in nothing short of a miracle, her teeth looked great!  No cavities, no tartar buildup.  We will consider this a small victory for our team!

Next, we headed to Hobby Lobby for a few activities to keep us busy tonight.  I made hair bows for Lucy's hats.

Then I came home and helped Erik hang the new picture of Jack, put laundry away and sewed Cabone rings on Lucy's blackout draperies in her room.

Oh, and I prayed a LOT today.  Alternating prayers for Justin and Lucy, I found myself talking with the big Man more than usual.

And on another note, Lucy won't leave the house without at least 2 blankets and 3 stuffed animals.  She's so cute!

And Jack plays so hard every day that he is likely to fall asleep anywhere, anytime!

I thank you all in advance for your prayers tomorrow.  I wish I could begin to explain what I am feeling tonight, but I can't.  So I will only say that my Hope is in the Lord and my strength comes from Him, too.  The prayers going up for Lucy now and tomorrow will help us make it through the worry and wait.

Thank you for loving my girl!

  1. I was just reminding my husband that Lucy's scans are tomorrow...we are praying for sweet Lucy and your beautiful family!

  2. I had braces twice & my Dad was my Orthodontist as well as my siblings and my Aunt and 2 of my Uncle's step kids and many friends! Tell Ella to do a lot of chewing since her teeth will be sore for awhile but the chewing will help with that, I don't know if they gave her something to chew on but plastic straws work just as well! All kids love to change the elastics each month. Each month when they do an adjustment her teeth might be sore too and if she gets anymore braces on, they might be a little sore.

    Prayers for Lucy's scans!

  3. Many prayers for Lucy and the family.

  4. Kate and Erik,
We continue to pray nightly for Lucy and your family. We are praying specifically for a wonderful scan tomorrow. May you draw great strength from our Savior!

  12. The picture of Ella wrapped in Lucy's arms, accompanied by the song, "Arms" is beyond precious. You know a throng of believers are praying around the world for Lucy and each one of your family. Our love and concern, our prayers and hopes, our belief in God, the Almighty is yours. Peace be with you as we await news that parallels what the dentist had to offer!

    1. Never, Ever Give Up! NEGU... Your new motto... (yes, it is an organization)

My prayers are with you and your family. Lucy is so blessed to have you. ((gentle hugs)) and lots of prayers for you, for Lucy and for your family - and all the other NEGU children with the horrible c word.

      Never, ever give up.

  13. Hi Kate,
You are a friend I've never met before in person. Lucy is such an inspiration as are you. Today's sermon at mass was about worry and fear and the priest said that we all must remember that ultimately, God is always with us. It's such a hard lesson to understand but I hope it brings you comfort knowing that Lucy is always resting in His hands. Hugs your way!

  14. Kate,
I went to bed praying for Lucy's scan today and for strength and peace for you and Erik. Several times during the night I woke up praying for you all and before my feet hit the ground, I was at it again. Praying for Blessings in the results.
    Ella is absolutely adorable!!

  15. Praying for Lucy to be covered in God's Grace and that you receive the news we are all hoping & praying for today.

  16. OH. MY. GOODNESS! Ella looks just like me now...well, her teeth anyway! :) She is growing up so much and those braces make her look so much like a big girl! Jack is so adorable conked out in his highchair. And Lucy is so cute with her blankets and stuffed animals! She is a living miracle of what the Lord has done. I'm so thrilled with the great report on her teeth! Praying for your family!
