Scenes from a Hospital

I don't know what to say.  There are no words that could begin to describe the state of awe that we continue to live in.  One week ago today I held my dying child, planning her funeral.  I had picked out the white dress she would be buried in.  I had arranged for Jack and Ella to have a nice outfit to wear.  I had begun to make a list of the songs that would be sung and the special things about Lucy that would be mentioned in her eulogy.  I had ordered a portrait of Lucy to be displayed by her closed casket.  Erik and I had called to arrange for 3 plots at the local cemetery.  I know this is a bit morbid, but I need to remember just how serious this situation was.

Lucy when her eyes were still not focusing

Please don't get me wrong, the situation is still serious here.  But oh my!  God continues to bless sweet Lucy with improved health, brain function and unbridled determination.  There are no words.

Doing a little fishing in PT

What's happening in Lucy's life is miraculous.  I am grateful for the amazing team of doctors, nurses and therapists we have been blessed with, but I know where the true glory is to be given.  It's the same place I was willing to give glory even if the tables had turned the other way.  The reality is, the tables can still turn at any time.  But right now we are full throttle to recovery from this horrible virus/bacteria that tried with all its might to take my daughter's life.
Would you look at these cheeks?  High dose steroids are good for something!

Have I mentioned that I am walking on sunshine right now?  God is good.  He really is so very merciful to those of us who are so unworthy.  I have no idea what the next few weeks/months will bring.  Actually, I have no idea what tomorrow will bring. What I do know is that our family has been given a gift.  We have been given another shot at life with our family.  I'm not sure what God has in store for us, but I pray that this time I am willing to listen and obey.

We are once again trying to juggle long days in the hospital with making sure Ella and Jack feel safe and loved.  Erik's parents have picked up and "moved" to town once again.  My mom has stepped into the role of hospital coordinator again.  My sweet Dad is working so that our family business doesn't fall apart.  This is not the life that I ever wanted to live again.  This is not the summer I had been planning for.  I guess if there is one thing I've learned its that WE are not in control of anything.  Whether you believe in the God I pray to or not, we can all probably agree that as hard as we try we have no real control over our lives.  There is a greater plan in play that shapes us into who we are meant to become.  One trial and one triumph at a time.

Here are a few pictures of us trying to make life work.  I did go home last night to watch Ella at VBS parent's night.  It was agonizing leaving Lucy and Erik at the hospital and I didn't sleep a wink, but both Ella and Jack were thrilled that I was home.

I will never, ever be able to say thank you for all the prayers that have been sent above for Lucy and our family.  Please continue to pray for understanding for Ella, peace for Jack and most of all HEALING for Lucy.

  8. Kate I am praying and believing Lucy is gonna live and tell her OWN story. It was the word God gave me that night brother Chuck opened FBC and we prayed! Lucy will talk, she will testify that OUR God reached down and said, NOT yet, her work is NOT done! Love you all. Tons of prayers!

  9. Wow! Kate there simply are no words. Just a happy heart. For Lucy, for your family, for everyone who's life has been touched and can see that miracles do still happen-all because of your faith,Lucy's determination, God's grace and mercy, and the outpouring of love and prayers by so many people. Our family has prayed for all of you everyday since this journey began, and we won't stop because we know God hears those prayers. I am a 32 year old mother of 3 who is battling breast cancer right now and when the chemo is rough and I feel like quitting, I think of Lucy. I remind myself that if precious Lucy can endure everything she's been through then I have no right to give up. My new motto is one I heard from Robin Roberts on GMAmonday when she announced her most recent diagnosis. "It's about focusing on the FIGHT, not the FRIGHT." May God continue to bless you and your family and wrap his arms of healing around Lucy.

  103. It seems as if i have a love for your family as do most strangers that have been following Lucy's story. I have cried with you all and smiled with you as you have been on this faith journey. I have been pleading with the Lord to save your sweet Lucy's life. What a kind father that He can give us such hope. My family and I have been going through the toughest trial in our lives for the past 3+ years and today we have found out that it is over. We are free from it. The only words I know to say at this moment is "the Lord is so faithful." Whatever the circumstances, that remains. A chapter the Lord had "given" to us and confirmed multiple times throughout our journey was 2 Chronicles 20. When you have time, read it. That is the mighty God we serve and pray to. Our Abba. Continuing to pray!

  116. Always remember the good things in life, don't dwell on the things that are sad. For life is a diary of memories, some good, some bad. But just remember there's purpose in all, whether joyful or peppered with pain, and though storm clouds for now may have darkened your skies soon the sun will break through once again. So just rest in the thought that God cares for us all, holding each of us in His great hand, as He guides us and comforts us, both great and small, till we all reach that promised land.
Praise God for His wonderful miracle for Lucy, and the comfort and hope that her testimony will bring to others.

God is shwing that all is in His timing...which we do not understand. However, we do know that He is the most powerful of the forces and He is still in control.

  177. I also share in your joy and the answered prayers of many, me included. One medical question (if you care to share the answer): has the cancer indeed returned, or was that part of the whole "body reverting back to previous scenarios" hypothesis the doctors suggested earlier in the week? Regardless, I am so grateful that you have this additional victory and time with Lucy! I will continue to pray.

  178. Kate...I have been following since I came across Lucy's story via "Finding Hope in Times of Grief" on Facebook. WOW. These photos of her are amazing! God is so good! I have to tell you that what you said about God really being in control totally touched my heart. You said, "There is a greater plan in play that shapes us into who we are meant to become. One trial and one triumph at a time." I really needed to read that since tomorrow is the first Father's Day I will spend without my sweet Daddy here on Earth. He left for Heaven very suddenly last September. How amazing our God is in that all you are facing and going through, He has used YOU to minister to ME! I am lifting Lucy and your family up in prayer. Love and prayers from North Carolina...Regina

I don't know your family, but I graduated from Union University in 1994, and I happened to see the post about your sweet daughter on Union's facebook page during this most recent health battle. My heart was broken for your family as I read your post just a week ago. I uttered a wordless prayer on your little one's behalf, and I have been compelled to check back every few days to see how she is doing. Thank you for posting these thoughts and reminding all of us that we will see, as Psalms 27 reminds us, "the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living." I pray this for you and your entire family in the days and weeks to come. My His peace be accessible at all times.

  183. Deborah, well asked. I have wondered the same thing, never to take away from this miraculous recovery over the last week.. and I know we can't understand or know God's plan for us or the Krull family and I am praying for them every day.. but I also wondered about the cancer reoccurance .. I know we want to live each day to It's fullest and it seems your family, Kate, is doing that. Your faith is something to be shared with the world and I think people will truly come to know Christ through you.. I know in time you will have more answers but as I said in my other posts, I did not ask it as well as Deborah.. thinking and praying for your family always

Hi Kate. I have been reading your blog ever since Auburn Kizer put it on Rodney's caring bridge. I have been praying a ton for Lucy and the whole family. We just had VBS at our church a week ago and it was about Jesus, the King. I am so glad that is who you are clinging to because there is really nowhere else to find hope. I was so heartbroken from your posts last week and could not stop thinking about ya'll. What a miracle! I couldn't believe the pictures from Friday. We certainly never know what God's plans are but so grateful to have Him to cling to in this fallen world! Keep writing, I love to see the updates. My womens Bible study this past year was the book of Isaiah. I learned so much about God's provision for His people and His great love and mercy. May you continue to be loved and supported by those around you and may He continue to show you more and more miracles.
